"The World Factbook provides information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 266 world entities."  This is a free database provided online, so no passwords are needed.

Gale Virtual Reference Library

An amazing collection of electronic reference books.  The best sections for World Languages are the History and Nation & World categories.  To limit to those, click on Advanced Search, then use your mouse and the control key to select History and Nation & World from the subject area limiter.  Then search as usual by keyword, title, etc.   Or simply use the basic search.
