Race to Nowhere is a documentary that shines a light on the pressure that students face to get ahead in a competitive academic landscape. I'm not exactly sure when learning turned into a competition, but that's neither here nor there... The film aims to discuss the other side of the coin, examining the ramifications of these pressures on our student's mental health and well-being. Many of my practices and philosophies have been influenced by the Race to Nowhere movement as I believe strongly in the development of my students as people and learners first and not products. I also try to do what I can to create an environment that is as stress free as a math classroom can be. Below are some links to the movie's website and I encourage you to explore them. If anything that you see interests you, please let me know. I'd love to talk about it!
