This course is designed to help students recognize an emergency situation. An emergency situation is one that demands immediate action. The goal of this course is to train students in the basics of first aid that will help them recognize and respond to any emergency appropriately. Their response may help save lives. The second half of senior health is family life. We will discuss topics including birth control, pregnancy, childbirth, abortion, adoption, child rearing and family budgeting. This course will help students feel the reality of life’s decisions. Each class period you must be prepared with a notebook, writing utensil and any other material required for the class. Topics for discussions will include responsibility, contraception and sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy and child birth. Other topics that will be discussed include the cost of raising a child during the first year, affect on college and career, dating and marriage, impact on family and friends, your partner, and parenting issues for young people.
After completing this course, you should:
- Be aware of dating issues and sexual responsibility
- The pitfalls of being a single parent at a relatively young age
- Understand some of the impact on your future in many areas
Requirements for the course include:
- Maintain an organized notebook
- Read and complete all handouts and packets assigned
- Develop a weekly budget based on a set amount
- Have an opportunity to care for a baby for one night or wear an empathy belly during the course of the school day (based on availability)
- Share your experience in class
_________________________CPR/First AidIf you are interested in receiving an ARC CPR card, please let me know by Friday (6.5)!About this course:In this day and age, people need to know what to do in an emergency until medical help arrives. Whether at home, work, school, or in your community, being able to lend assistance can make a difference. Since you, the Citizen Responder, are the person most likely to be first on the scene of an emergency, it is important that you know how to recognize emergencies and how to respond. This course will prepare you to make appropriate decisions regarding first aid care and to act on those decisions.
After completing this course, you should be able to:
- Recognize when an emergency has occurred
- Follow the emergency action steps Check, Call, Care, for any emergencies
- Provide care for injury or sudden illness until professional medical help arrives
- This includes CPR, Obstructed Airways, and Artificial Respiration (child/infant)
Requirements for course completion:
- Perform specific skills competently and demonstrate the ability to make appropriate decisions for care.
- Pass a final written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher.
- You will need an organized notebook for use in unannounced quizzes
- There is no book for this class, but you are responsible to read and complete all handouts and packets
- Check school wires weekly for updates
